Book Review: The Making of A Man

THE MAKING OF A MAN – How Men and Boys Honor God and Live with Integrity by TIM BROWN and James Lund

I love Tim Brown’s writing style and his authentic take on life. I relate to so much of what he writes about as a husband, father, and someone who wants to make a difference in the world.

Known as “Mr. Raider,” Tim played seventeen seasons in the NFL, won the Heisman Trophy at Notre Dame, and is a sporting legend! The book is a humbling account of his remarkable journey – both the highs and lows.

He doesn’t hold back in acknowledging his struggles and triumphs – and his turbulent relationships with women, life, God, and manhood (not necessarily in that order).

At the beginning of the book, he asks, “What exactly is manhood? How do guys get there?”

From there, he unpacks his story, and it’s a riveting read.

While it’s a sports memoir of note, it’s so much more than that – the book about faith and family and what it takes to show up as a man in this world truly. You don’t have to like football to enjoy this book that inspires and challenges one on every page.

His commitment to God, faith, and bringing up his boys with values and backbone gave me some amazing insights. He also doesn’t hold back with the difficult parts of this life and the fact that he still has questions and is still finding his way – was comforting and reassuring. I enjoy how he explores his rewarding but sometimes challenging relationship with God and his desire to do the right thing.

He writes, “I won’t say that I’ve got it all figured out or that I haven’t made mistakes along the way. Yet the blessings I’ve been given, especially my family, my football career, and my faith, have given me unique insights into the male perspective. I have learned that becoming a man is about much more than talking tough, trying to look cool, or scoring touchdowns. The answer has many layers, some fairly obvious and some subtle.”

Tim’s amazing story will stay with you long after you’ve put the book down, that’s for sure.

I won’t give it all away in this review. Still, I will say that if you are looking for gritty inspiration, a great personal story, and some enlightening home truths, pick up a copy of Tim Brown’s “The Making of A Man – How Men and Boys Honor God and Live with Integrity.”

The book is available at all good bookstores and on Amazon.
