Fun Things to Do Over the Holidays

I love international travel as much as the next guy, but I also enjoy discovering my own “backyard.” We live on beautiful Pawleys Island, but I consider the Carolinas my stomping ground, and there is so much to explore during the holiday season.

Pawleys Island is an incredible place to live (and visit). No matter the season – there is always something on the go. The area’s natural beauty is awesome, and people often visit to top up their energy levels by being in nature – going for long walks definitely does it for me. Golfers love the place because of the great golf courses (there are a few to choose from). Don’t miss the Nights of a Thousand Candles event at Brookgreen Gardens.

Charleston is a fun city to visit – it’s a great foodie destination – especially at this time of the year when everyone is in the mood to celebrate. Take a walking tour of the city, and/or horse-drawn carriage tours are also really popular. I’m a history guy, so I love exploring the back story of Charleston! The Charleston Christmas Markets are also a big attraction and a great way to get a sense of the place, shop for last-minute gifts, and get a real sense of local life. You could spend an entire week exploring this great city’s main attractions and still need extra time to take it all in.

Charlotte is another fine historic city (North Carolina) and a great place for exploration, so I was delighted to stumble upon the charlottesgotalot website (there is also a great Instagram feed of the same name). The site features the best of what’s on now, the main attractions, and some unique off-the-beaten-track activities. Visit the murals that honor black history around Charlotte – some truly amazing work by very talented artists; You’ll want to see the holiday light displays, including the canopy of lights at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. There are also exciting shows and some great shopping to do.

So welcome to the Carolinas for the Christmas holidays. Come and join us in making awesome memories in my backyard!
