Sharing “My Why” with WPDE-TV

The launch of my book, The Success Paradox: How to Surrender and Win in Life and Business, has brought so many incredible opportunities. It was officially launched on the 13th of June, and the response has been incredible. The book has been on several Amazon best-seller lists, and the reviews, comments, and messages of support from near and far have been humbling. When Will T. Wilkinson (my co-author) and I started on this book journey – we knew it would lead to something bigger than the two of us… and I think we are only just getting started.

I had the privilege of doing a TV interview with the WPDE-TV news team, and the first question was the same one I get from so many people: Why write a book?

My Why

As I explain in this video clip, I wrote The Success Paradox because a young man named Jack Buffington committed suicide. He was our best friend’s son in Pawleys Island, and his death hit hard. It got me thinking about the pressures our young people are under. There were a number of teen suicides in our area around the same time that Jack passed, and I felt compelled to write the book to find some way to make a difference.

I had been through my own dark time (as you’ll read about in my book or listen to on the podcast), and I felt compelled to start The Open Mind Fitness Foundation with Will –  to fund the work we want to do to help young people. We plan to publish another book focusing on mental wellness for teenagers and young adults. As I say in my interview, I want to get the message out there, “You don’t have to compare yourself to social media. You are good enough just the way God made you.”

I’m looking forward to more TV engagements and opportunities to talk about the book and what needs to be done to create awareness around issues of mental fitness.

The book is available on Amazon if you haven’t yet gotten a copy of The Success Paradox. If you enjoy it, please write a review or share it with a friend. All the proceeds are going to a worthy cause.

Gary I am so glad you are starting a movement! There are so many people in Pawleys that are hiding behind mental illness and there is nowhere for them to turn. We need local help to help. Not everyone is comfortable seeking help especially if it is local. This is awesome as we have so many young people that needs help. Keep up the good work!
